My Opinion and Analysis on Tithing and who should pay Tithe

This topic has been a subject of debate over the years and though most people had little contrary opinions about tithing from the ones told and preached by clergymen, it didnt stop others from digging deep to find out the truth about tithing.

I happen to be one of those people, not because I dont want to give to God, but because I do not understand why someone will be giving 10% of his income to God and still that person can not boast of 100 Million Naira in his or her account.

I mean, God is not a mediocre and if He gives you something it is always the best. Secondly, I do not also understand why God demands for 10% of my income before He can enrich me when Jesus Christ was said to have paid the ultimate price for my salvation and He even said “take therefore no thought for tomorrow, for tomorrow will take thoughts of the things of itself”.

These few questions ignited a desire to understand tithing more and research it beyond what my pastor was telling me. What I found out is what I am going to share here today so relax and read.

I will focus on 2 books of the bible which is Deuteronomy and Malachi.

These 2 books of the bible contains everything we need to understand about tithing.

This is what God said in Deuteronomy 14: 22-29

New International Version (NIV)

22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. 24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25 then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. 27 And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.

28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

You can read from your own bible to ascertain this. This is a clear cut instruction pertaining to tithing and if you study it closely, it says you should not neglect the Levites living in your towns which you could say your neighbors and strangers. If you read further you will discover that God has always wanted you to invest your income and business and whatever.

Now, let us go to Malachi where most pastors are using to preach about tithe and I implore that you read with understanding and I pray the Holy Spirit of God to reveal things to you.

Most churches refer to Malachi 3:9-10 as the ultimate instruction from God concerning tithing, they use this particular portion to threaten offenders who refuse paying tithe.

Malachi 3:9-10 New International Version (NIV)

9You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

Now, the surprising thing is that Christians are so gullible that some of them read the bible based on the pastor’s instructions. They do not read to have a clear cut understanding of the word of God and I laugh when people make reference to this portion of the bible and relate it with tithing.

The above portion of the bible is an instruction by God to priests, remember in the olden days that Sanctuary was a place where people go to get help and succour. Rich people always go with gifts to offer in the sanctuary and God instructs the priests in charge of the offerings to set aside 10% in His storehouse and there will never be any lack in the sanctuary.

Are you doubting me? Okay let us go back to Malachi, see why your pastor will not start from the beginning of the sciprture to preach but will cut to where it suits him and start preaching. Read below;

Malachi 2:1 New International Version (NIV)

Additional Warning to the Priests

“And now, you priests, this warning is for you.

If you read in King James Version it says;

Malachi 2:1 King James Version (KJV)

And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.

The commandment leads down to the end of chapter 3. DO not forget that in the olden days, the bible was not written in Chapter.

You can make reference to your own bible to confirm this.

Now, listen carefully, God does not need you to give Him anything before He will bless you, if that is the case then the death of Jesus Christ would be in vain.

The coming of Jesus Christ abolished sacrifice and tithes which was not even given to you as commandment but for priests.

I will explain what Jesus Himself said we should do and what has proven to work for me in my many years of experimenting.
