On Thursday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom had conducted councillorship primaries across the 368 wards in the state.
The candidates emerged under a peaceful exercise across the 31 local government areas of the state.
The councillorship primaries exercise is preparatory to the local government elections scheduled to hold on October 31, 2020, as announced by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC).
Our sources believe that the chaos and gunshots heard happened only hours after the primaries, implying that the elections were peaceful.
The Congress Committee Chairman, Mr.Victor Etefia supervised the primary election, in the company of the PDP Party Chairman, Barr. Ekemini Ubah, who urged all delegates to conduct themselves according to the party’s stipulated Covid-19 guidelines.

On August 2, indications had emerged that the All Progressives Congress, APC, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, would not participate in the forthcoming local government polls scheduled for October 31, 2020.
The State Publicity Secretary of the party, Nkereuwem Eyongekere, dropped the hints and alleged a conspiracy between the state government and the state electoral commission to outwit the opposition parties in the council polls.
“APC frowns at this reckless breach of the law and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by AKISIEC under Governor Udom-led PDP government and proceeds to challenge this illegality in the court of law.”, he said.
