In Ebonyi State, the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had a landslide victory in last Saturday’s council elections, held across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.
Apart from the Local Government seats, the ruling party also swept all the 171 available councillorship seats ahead of the main opposition party in the state, the All Progressive Congress, APC.
Jossy Eze, the chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission, EBSIEC, announced the elections result in Abakaliki on Sunday.
He disclosed that twelve political parties participated in the election including African Action Congress, AAC, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The chairman of EBSIEC, while declaring the winners in the election, affirmed the victory of PDP candidates in all LGAs.
According to him: “the outcome of the local government election conducted on Saturday 29th August 2020 was commendable. Recall that this election was earlier scheduled to hold last 6th August but of COVID-19, it was shifted.
“I want to thank the Ebonyi State government for its non-interference in the election conducted yesterday in the 13 LGAs of the state.
“In any election, there must be losers and winners. I urge the winners to be magnanimous in victory”, he added.
The newly elected Council Chairmen are scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday, September 1, 2020.
The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information, Uchenna Orji, revealed in a statement signed he signed, that the State Governor Dave Umahi will perform the swearing-in ceremony at the state Ecumenical centre, Abakaliki.
