President Buhari today approved N8.49 Billion Naira for Covid-19 testing at the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting held at the Executive Chambers.
The funds which are for the procurement and purchase of necessary equipment for the testing of the coronavirus is aimed at controlling and containing community spread of the global pandemic in the country.
The country has over 580 Local Government Areas out of the 774 Local Government Areas of the federation already dominated by the virus.
The Minister of Health made this known after the meeting presided by President Muhammadu Buhari. The Minister said the council also approved a National Agenda Action plan and Climate Change.
The FEC, virtually attended by some Ministers was dominated by talks of the ravaging coronavirus, which lead to the approval of the NCDC memo submitted by the Ministry of Health.
The NCDC memo requested for N8.49 Billion from the Special Intervention Fund for Covid-19 being operated by the Presidential taskforce.
This would improve the diagnostic aptitudes of the commission towards expanding its testing and diagnostic capabilities.
The Honorable Minister in his words said ”We are procuring the materials right from the sample materials to other kits for diagnostic in our laboratory to be able to respond properly to the community transmission phase”.
”We have already made plans to have at least one sample collection center in every local government area leading to a minimum of 774 in all. These resources will be necessary to go round all the 774 local government areas to guarantee that persons in rural areas and small towns are not excluded, to ensure that not only the big cities are the once attended to”
The information Minister also on his part commented on the recent political parties rally held at different parts of the country. He maintained the Government’s position that for now, mass gatherings are still being prohibited.
In his words, he said ” We will continue to advise on social distancing in whatever gathering as it has been proven that wearing a face mask saves many lives, including you and the other people……. and will continue to beg on people to please take personal responsibility seriously and we are deepening our conversations with the Sub-nationals, State Governors and Local Government Chairmen to take personal responsibility, and if anybody says that wearing a mask isn’t good, let him try a ventilator”
The Minister further enumerated health, sanitary and agriculture, information, energy, and well as transportation as areas of priority in the Gender Action Plan. He also enumerated the Climate Change sector, aimed at reducing gas emissions in Nigeria by 45% before the year 2030.
He stated that the Minister of Environment will drive the implementation with funding from Proceeds from the Green bond, International Donor Agencies and Special Budgetary Provisions from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
