Sevilla beat Inter Milan 3-2 in a thrilling final to clinch the Europa League Cup.
The club seems to continue what seems to be a love affair with the Europa League as they beat Inter Milan behind closed doors on Friday in Cologne to win the trophy for a record-extending sixth time.
Sevilla’s defender Diego Carlos scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute with an overhead kick which took a huge deflection Inter Milan’s forward Romelu Lukaku.
The first half ended in a 2-2 draw with two goals from Sevilla’s playmaker de Jong and individual goals from Inter’s Lukaku and Godin.
Diego Carlos received a yellow card in the fourth minute for fouling Belgian Lukaku who seemed to have had a clear scoring opportunity.
The Belgian dusted himself and seized the chance to fire Inter into the lead with a penalty. This increased his goal tally of the season to 34.
Sevilla soon equalized with a header from Luuk de Jong in the 13th minute. The Dutchman found the back of the net again in 33rd minute, to give his side the lead, only for Inter defender Diego Godin to also score a header moments later to make it 2-2.
The match was played in a neutral location with no spectators in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sevilla have come from behind to win in each of their last three Europa League Finals:
Summary of Sevilla’s Final Wins.
In 2006, they won 4-0 against Middlesborough. In 2007, they won the penalty shootout after their 2-2 full-time draw with Espanyol.
In 2014, they also won in a penalty shootout after their goalless full-time draw with Benfica. In 2015 the Spanish club won 3-2 against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.
In 2016, they won 3-1 against Liverpool, and today, in 2020, they extended their record with a 3-2 win against Inter Milan.
Antonio Conte’s Inter dropped out of the Champions League but have looked impressive in 2020, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez spearheading their fearsome attack.
Unfortunately, Inter have beaten a Spanish team only once in their last 12 attempts, their previous victory coming in a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona 10 years ago.
The match was the first meeting between the two sides in European competition. It was Sevilla’s fourth EL final in seven years.
Together with today’s match, Sevilla have reached the Europa League final on six occasions, winning all six to make them the most successful club in the history of the competition.
Inter’s last European final was in 2010, where under the charge of Jose Mourinho, they beat Bayern Munich 2-0 to win the Champions League.
