Former President of the United States, Barack Obama has rallied voters against President Trump as he delivered a dire message calling for voters to protect American democracy.
The former president argued that Donald Trump’s potential reelection posed an existential threat to the country’s democratic values and institutions. He implored voters to “embrace your own responsibility as citizens” ahead of November’s election.
CNN reports that for the last three-and-a-half years, Barrack Obama largely receded into the background while Donald Trump sowed chaos, punished his political opponents and nurtured his grievances as the nation plunged into a pandemic and an economic collapse.
But on Wednesday, Obama became the person that Democratic activists have been yearning for him to become.
He spoke to Americans as plainly as he could about the odds that would be present should Donald Trump be reelected.
The former President served as a character witness for Presidential aspirant Joe Biden. He expressed excoriation On Trump for being selfish, unserious and showing no interest in finding common ground.
He stated: “Donald Trump hasn’t grown into the job because he can’t, and the consequences of that failure are severe.
“170,000 Americans dead. Millions of jobs gone while those at the top take in more than ever. Our worst impulses unleashed, our proud reputation around the world badly diminished and our democratic institutions threatened like never before.”
Obama made the case for Joe Biden who was his former vice president. Obama expressed discontentment and rebuked the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the presidency in general.
Before the convention, Obama was scheduled to speak after whoever was to be Biden’s running mate. But once Kamalis Harris was selected, Obama suggested switching the order so he could speak first, followed by her.
A person close to Obama said: “It felt like an opportunity to symbolically pass the torch, give her her moment and spotlight.”
The 44th President of America’s speech was one of the most confrontational and blistering statements he has made about his successor.
Obama said his former vice president was like a brother although they come from different generations backgrounds. He presented Biden as a proud and devoted father.
He highlighted the great resilience Biden showed after the death of his first wife and baby daughter in 1972 and his son Beau Biden in 2015.
Obama added: “Joe and Kamala’s ability to lead this country out of these dark times and build it back better.”
He said Joe and Kamala will restore America’s standing in the world, as Joe and the world know themselves, and both Joe and his vice-presidential running mate, Kamala care about every American.
The former President acknowledged that many voters have already made up their minds on whether they should vote at all, and who to vote for.
