ASUU Begs Nigerian Students for their Cooperation

Following the reactions of many Nigerians over the decision of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to continue the ongoing strike, a statement has been released asking students for their cooperation.

ASUU had in a previous statement stated that the strike will continue until the Federal Government meets all its demands.

They appealed to students to show understanding, indicating that their actions are in the best interest of the students and nation at large.

“Students who are our children and partners in progress should show understanding, what we are asking from the government are in their interest and the interest of the nation…”

” Good hostel accommodation, good classroom blocks that can engender effective learning, laboratories where cutting edge research can be carried out and offices that can drive the process of quality university education”

ASUU reflected that their demands were not baseless but a conscious attempt to revamp the educational standard of the country.

The statement read: “So what we are asking of the government are not baseless things, but those things that in 2012, the government conducted during a needs assessment survey and found out that there is widespread rot and decay in the university system.”

Despite the appeal, a lot of people took to Twitter to react over the issue.

“Its a lie. You only use these cosmetic demands to seek students’ sympathy and support.”, a concerned citizen reacted.

“Under your watch, student fees have been increased astronomically, University Managements have victimized student union leaders and proscribed unions without a solidarity protest form”, he added.

Another person contributed: ” The last billions released, I’d love to see the proof of the classrooms and hostel built. It saddens me to see that the undergraduate community has allowed you to do this to us. We deserve better not this substandard education you offer us.”
